Frequently Asked Questions
What does scalp micropigmentation do?
I use an electric needle device to deposit medical-grade pigment into the scalp, replicating the appearance of hair follicles. SMP can create the visual effect of increased density, a sharper hairline, or a close-cropped style. It does not stimulate hair growth, affect follicles, or restore natural hair.
Who can benefit from SMP?
I offer SMP for men experiencing thinning at the crown, temples, or top, as well as shaved styles and female diffuse thinning. It can also suit alopecia areata, transplant scars, scalp scars, and chemotherapy-related hair loss. I assess your scalp, hair-loss pattern, skin, and expectations during consultation.
How many SMP sessions will I need?
Most clients need two to four sessions spaced several weeks apart. Many female clients need two to three sessions, while male density clients commonly need two to four. Pigment density builds progressively from approximately 40 impressions per square centimeter to 80 to 100 by the final session.
How long does the SMP process take?
The complete process from your first session to a settled, finished result takes approximately three to four months. Each session needs time to heal, and the full healed result is not visible until about 30 days after treatment. I use follow-up sessions to refine density, tone, and balance.
What is recovery like after SMP?
Some redness and mild swelling are normal during the first two days and usually settle within 48 to 72 hours. From day five, gentle washing with mild, fragrance-free shampoo is permitted. Avoid scrubbing, harsh products, steam, and direct sun during healing, then resume normal grooming from day ten.
How can I protect my SMP results?
I recommend broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50 on the scalp whenever you are outdoors from day ten onward, or wearing a hat. Sun exposure is the fastest way to fade SMP. Oily skin and exfoliating products can also accelerate fading, while diligent protection may extend results for years.
